In addition to traditional immunotherapy with allergy shots, at Michael R. Gatto, M.D. & Associates, we offer oral allergy drops, known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Recognized by the World Health Organization as a “viable alternative” for allergy relief, allergy drops are a safe and convenient way for you or your patients to overcome sensitivity to environmental and food allergies.

First, patients must come in for a comprehensive evaluation and allergy test to determine their allergy triggers. Then a custom, prescription serum is formulated, which, over time desensitizes them to the irritating allergens. One bottle of serum lasts for three months with a daily dosage of just three drops under the tongue. After three months, the patient comes back for a follow-up visit and the strength of the serum is increased for the next three months of therapy. The drops usually begin working within a few weeks and may completely eliminate allergies within three-to-five years. Most patients are able to reduce the amount of symptom-relieving medications that they use as a result of the allergy drops.Other conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma may be alleviated as well.

Oral allergy drops provide an effective alternative for patients who want allergy relief, but do not want shots – whether because of the time involved to come to the office for weekly administering of shots, simply a dislike of shots, or perhaps because the patient is very young. Allergy drops also can be given to people with asthma and pregnant women can continue their immunotherapy during their pregnancy.

The allergy drops are painless, portable and self-administered, so virtually anyone with allergies can use them to ease their symptoms. At a cost of about $100 per month, they also are more affordable than allergy shots.

Allergy Drop FAQs

How do under-the-tongue Sublingual Allergy immunotherapy drops work?
A small portion of your drops – much like allergy shots – contain common allergens. These allergens when placed under the tongue, absorb into the bloodstream, and over time gradually lessen the impact of these allergens on your body.

How long will it take before I feel better?
Many patients experience symptom relief after a few months of Sublingual Allergy Immunotherapy treatment; others, within just a few weeks.

Are Sublingual Allergy Immunotherapy drops safe?
Sublingual Allergy Immunotherapy drops – just as allergy shots – have the same portion of natural antigens. Yet, since the drops are free of the allergy shots’ higher degree/risk of anaphylactic reaction, the drops are safe enough to be taken at home.

Will Sublingual Allergy Immunotherapy drops work anywhere?
Yes. Even though several allergy programs are regionally specific for local pollens, the allergy drops serum contains most common pollens. So, take your allergy drops with you to continue treatment when traveling.
